Derby County have beat off competition from numerous clubs to secure the signing of the highly-rated winger Kris Commons.

The 24-year-old has agreed a three-year contract to become the Rams' sixth capture of the summer after turning down interest from other clubs.

Derby boss Paul Jewell has already added Ruben Zadkovich, Paul Connolly, Nathan Ellington, Jordan Stewart and Paul Green - all, as with Commons, in their mid-20s - to his ranks.

And after taking his summer ins to six, he described the capture of Commons as "a gem".

He said: "This is a gem of a signing for us and a terrific boost that Kris has chosen to join Derby County over the numerous other clubs who were also keen to secure his signature.

"He is a player who can unlock doors; he has that X Factor, a genuine match winner.

"When I met him I was also impressed with his hunger and desire to improve and play at the highest level. I like his ambition and his drive.

"Kris is our sixth signing of the close season and I'm really pleased with the momentum we are building up on the transfer front now.

"There is lots more happening behind the scenes and I hope it isn't too long before we are able to announce another signing."

Mansfield-born Commons was released by Nottingham Forest in May having played a key role in helping the Reds win promotion to the Coca-Cola Championship.

He made a total of 159 appearances for Forest, scoring 38 goals, after moving from Stoke City in 2004.

Commons graduated from Stoke's youth ranks and made his debut for the Potters back in October 2001.

He becomes the first player to make a direct move from Nottingham Forest to Derby County since Gary Charles arrived at the Baseball Ground in July 1993.
