Paul Jewell has outlined his confidence about bringing Derby County back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Jewell took over at the end of November with the Rams rooted to the bottom of the table and is yet to taste a league victory.

Relegation was confirmed in the last game of March and Jewell's plans for the Coca-Cola Championship are moving along at pace.

"I can't really defend what has gone on here this season," Jewell revealed in the second part of an in-depth RamsWorld interview now being screened.

"Despite the promotion we had last season the club wasn't in a great state when I got here - as far as morale and spirit were concerned, it wasn't great.

"But it will be great next year, that's my aim.

"I am not passing the buck because I will be the first to hold my hand up and say that resulves haven't been anything near what I'd want or expect since I've been here.

"But I am very bullish about next year. Hopefully we can get back in the Premier League and have a team we can all be proud of."

Jewell's confidence is based on his previous successes in the second tier with Bradford City and Wigan Athletic.

He took over at Bradford in January 1998 and saved them from relegation before guiding them to the Premier League in his first full season.

The Scouser arrived at Wigan in the summer of 2001 and led them to seventh in 2003/04, their first-ever season at the second level of the English game.

Twelve months later he achieved what many viewed as the impossible by guiding the Latics to the Premier League less than 30 years since their graduation from non-league football.

Jewell said: "At the end of the day I'm not going to hide behind anything as the results have been rubbish since I have been here.

"But I have been in the Championship for three or four years in my career and I've been promoted twice, finished seventh once, so I'm very confident about getting promoted next year.

"I almost wish people could open the doors and see the work that is going on here (at Moor Farm) as it is an exciting time."

Jewell watched on from the dug-out as Derby fell to a 6-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa on Saturday - their heaviest-ever reverse at Pride Park Stadium.

He admitted it was one of the worst feelings of his career, either as a player or manager.

But Jewell remains confident that he can return the Rams to the top-flight in 2008/09.

He said: "That was probably the worst I have ever felt after a game as to be baten 6-0 at home in front of 33,000 people is horrible.

"I cannot guarantee promotion but what I am entitled to do is to be confident.

"I have never been one to make rash statements but I do not think that this is a rash statement.

"There are no guarantees, of course, but what I am saying to supporters is that I think we will get promotion, I really do."
