BOSS IS ON WATCH
Paul Jewell is determined to be captain of a happy ship at Derby County - and he's keeping a watchful eye on the attitude of his players and staff as he looks ahead to 2008/09.
"Some people have done themselves favours and others have done themselves harm since I came here," the Derby manager told RamsWorld.
"I watch them in training and the way they go about the place. I take everything in: how they are, what time they come in for training, what time they go home, who's always living on the edge to get in for training, who's a positive influence around the place and who maybe isn't.
"Obviously you add to that what they do on the training pitch and what they do on the park and all these factors come into running a football club.
"There's more to it than simply putting a team of 11 players together out on the pitch. What I want to build, and I keep saying it, is a club from the youngest player to the oldest person. I want a happy ship and add to that good players and winning games and we might have a chance."
Right now Jewell admits it's a frustrating time. "I just want to get going for next season," he said. "I have a lot of ideas I want to put in place and a lot of players I want to bring in and a lot of things I want to change. I've found it difficult to change things when people's mindsets are a certain way. Every manager and every coach does things differently - there's no right way and no wrong way - it's just the way you like to do things and the way I like to do things is different from the way I have had to do things since I came here.
"That's no excuse because I could have come in and tried to change the culture right away. Maybe looking at the results that might have been a better thing because the results obviously haven't worked by me trying to go with certain things but I can tell you things will be different next season with regard to attitude and people's outlook because if they don't want to do what I want to do certainly they won't be part of the group.
"I'm looking to bring in not just good players but good people to the football club."
