Paul Jewell faced up to relegation after Saturday's encouraging 2-2 home draw with Fulham by looking ahead to March 2009.

"This time next vyear I hope I'm standing here with a smile on my face looking forward to getting this club back into the Premier League," the Derby boss told dcfc.co.uk.

"The money we have spent since I came here was always about next season because the quality of player that we needed to get out of this league would not have come to a club doomed to relegation.

"If, God willing, we can come back next year or the year after we will be stronger in all departments, both physically and mentally.

"You don't grow into the Premier League; you have to take it by the scruff of the neck. I haven't been able to arrest the slide and I'm not looking to pass the buck but we weren't prepared.  

"I know we haven't got a divine right to be in the shake-up next season but I have never been more determined in my life to be a success. I've had a tough week and so I'm determined to turn it around for the people who stood by me and hopefully my record as Derby manager will justify that support."

Of the game itself, Jewell said: "I thought it would be a good game because it was one we could win and one Fulham had to win. I told my players to get up and at them. They showed character and battling qualities to come back from 2-1 - Sterjovski was brilliant in the second half and Carroll is getting better by the game.

"It was a good game and the fans were great again with 33,000 against a team second bottom in the league.

"What I'm looking for now is for the players to say 'look - I want to be here next season' and we want to get past the 15 point mark for everyone connected with the club, especially the supporters. I'm a bit embarrssed to be saying that's our target, but we then have to learn the lessons of this season.

"I have been promoted twice from the Championship and the only other season I just missed out on the Play Offs."
