Phil Matthews reports from the Pirelli Stadium
Chelsea substitute Fabio Borini broke the deadlock three minutes from time and the Londoners added a second before the final whistle as a young Rams Reserves lost 2-0 on Monday night in the Barclays Premier Reserve League south section.
Youth team player Borini, a left winger, was introduced for his reserve team debut on 76 minutes at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium to break the resistance of a Derby side still looking for a first league victory of the campaign.
Borini appeared at the far post to score from a Chelsea corner and soon after the re-start another Stamford Bridge youth product Daniel Philliskirk - also in for his first reserve game - made it two with a shot from the egde of the box that beat Derby keeper Ben Hinchliffe.
In an opening period with little goalmouth action, the biggest worry for the home side was an injury to Jermaine Johnson that left the defender limping. Thankfully he was able to continue after treatment.
The Rams carved out a chance for themselves on 14 when Anthony Robertson outpaced the Chelsea defence down the left flank before firing in a cross that Stuart Searle in the visitors' goal managed to get to just ahead of Paris Simmons (pictured above, right).
The young Pensioners spurned a gilt-edged opportunity on 28 minutes when Fabio Ferreira skied a seemingly unmissable chance over the bar after Jack Booth was caught in possession.
Hinchliffe did well two minutes later to catch a driven free kick taken by Franco Di Santo from 20 yards.
As the first half moved into stoppage time Henry Ojamaa earned Derby a free kick 20 yards out but they were unable to make anything of it.
With 53 minutes gone the Rams had the visitors' defence struggling as Simmons bore down on goal before laying the ball off to Booth who fired wide.
The running of the Derby number 10 was causing problems and he was denied the chance of a penalty a minute later when tripped in the area with referee Barratt content to wave play on.
Robertson created himself a chance with a strong run just shy of the hour mark but could only find the side netting.
Henrik Ojamaa fired at the keeper from the edge of the box on 63 and Hinchliffe saved the day moments later, coming out of his box to bravely head clear after the Blues caught the home defence short-numbered with a quick break.
A well flighted cross from Philliskirk on 67 created danger but Di Santo was unable to make contact and the moment was gone.
Chelsea's late strikes were cruel for the young Rams, but the balance of chances was just in the visitors' favour.
