Derby County in the Community's Emily Simpkins has been recognised for her overseas efforts by being named a 2008 Community Champion.

The 17-year-old spent a week in Malawi last year as part of the Football Association's Changing Lives Saving Lives programme.

There she helped raise awareness of HIV in young African girls as well as teach local children about football.

She was nominated by her dad Michael and picked up her award at Sunday night's glittering ceremony at Pride Park Stadium.

"It is great everybody being together and getting recognition and there will be people who have been nominated and have done just as much," Emily said after receiving her prize from Derby South MP Margaret Beckett and Derby Evening Telegraph editor Steve Hall.

Simon Carnall, manager of Derby County in the Community, said Emily had become an intergral part of the team.

He added: "Emily shows energy and enthusiasm in all of the work she undertakes.

"Emily worked hard to be involved in the Changing Lives Saving Lives project and the Community Champions award is a great recognition for the effort and commitment she demonstrates on a daily basis."

John Vicars, Derby County's vice-president of operations, said: "Due to the outstanding work Emily has undertaken she has not only become an ambassador for the football club, but she is also now seen as a role model for other teenagers."
