A 3-0 win away from home, a clean sheet for a young goalkeeper on his debut and a first start for another teen ace - plenty of positives to be taken as the Rams' U18 team moved up to second in the table.

Derby's youngsters saw off Barnsley on Saturday thanks to a double from Paris Simmons and a clincher by Tyron Amory.

It was a fifth win from the last six games and an excellent day's work in South Yorkshire.

"Before the game Barnsley were on nine points and we were on 12 so it was quite close in terms of league positions," Academy manager Kevin Thelwell told www.dcfc.co.uk.

"From previous history and the games last season we knew that Barnsley would be extremely aggressive, very direct and hard-working.

"We knew that they would provide is with a very difficult game so to come away from there with a 3-0 win is fantastic.

"Two fantastic goals from Paris and a second in two weeks for Tyron Amory suggests that the strikers are making the difference at the moment with their quality.

"We are absolutely delighted with the win and more importantly delighted with the clean sheet on Jake Kean's first start."

First-year scholar Kean took his opportunity with regular number one Ross Atkins away on international duty with England U19.

Atkins was on the bench twice for the national side over the weekend but is due to make his first England start on Wednesday night.

"Ross is due to play on Wednesday and that is great for him - everyone at the Academy is absolutely delighted," Thelwell said.

"For Jake it was a first start of the season and it was always going to be difficult, he was always going to be slightly nervous, but he performed admirably.

"Jake made a great save in the first half to keep us at 0-0 and then performed his duties very well to keep the clean sheet."

There was also a first start of the season for schoolboy full-back Luke Garton after a couple of substitute appearances.

Garton cannot become a full-time scholar until next season but has already made a good impression.

"He's been on the bench a couple of times and come on to perform brilliantly, getting at least 30 minutes under his belt each time," Thelwell added.

"Luke deserved his start and it was an extremely positive appearance for him.

"He played for over an hour and did very well - we're delighted with his progress."
